BITS: A NEW EXHIBITION AT a83

Bits, bites, pieces, fragments, and chunks of art and architecture.

83 Grand Street, New York
10/28/2021 - 12/10/2021

About the Exhibition:
a83 opens a new exhibition BITS featuring pieces of art and architecture by Takefumi Aida, Stephanie Brody-Lederman, Buckminster Fuller, Michael Graves and Edward Schmidt, Charles Luce, OMA / Rem Koolhaas, RUR / Jesse Reiser and Nanako Umemoto, Bob Stanley, Sam Tippett, and Roger Welch. The selection of work included in BITS is largely comprised of pieces held within the a83 print archive–a collection of fine-art print editions and artifacts produced by and exhibited at 83 Grand Street under master printmaker John Nichols from 1978-1994–and reflects the confluence of art and architecture within the printmaking/exhibition operation.

About a83:
a83 is a tiny organization with a three-part mission to exhibit, publish, and promote experimental projects in architecture, art, and design. Started in 1978 by master printmaker John Nichols, the organization continues to operate at the original location in Soho as a printmaking studio, project-space, and continually growing archive. The 83 Grand Street location is used to produce exhibitions and installations, host workshops, and broadcast work to new audiences.

About a83’s Archive:
The John Nichols Printmakers (JNP) Archive at a83 documents a crucial period of architectural and fine-art printmaking in New York City from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s. The JNP Archive collection is comprised of work produced by and exhibited at John Nichols Printmakers on Grand Street in Soho, New York from 1978-1994. The archive features editions printed for and artifacts by Takefumi Aida, Laurie Anderson, Joseph Beuys, Roberto Burle Marx, Liz Diller, Peter Eisenman, Michael Graves, Frank Gehry, Steven Holl, Thom Mayne, Charles Moore, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown, and others. The contents of the JNP Archive provides rare documentation of the development of art and design practices as they oscillate between paper-projects and built work. The collection of artifacts is notable as it is from an era on the verge of digital image production in which printmaking, specifically screenprinting, played an integral role in presenting art and architecture to a broader audience.
